2018 is winding down, which means it’s time to start thinking about those New Year’s resolutions. This year, we challenge you to make (and keep!) a resolution that is shown to reduce stress—resolve to be more creative. Like physical exercise, being creative focuses your mind and produces feel-good chemicals like dopamine and serotonin. It also decreases negative emotions and reduces anxiety. Just a small increase in creativity can have a positive impact on your health. (And you don’t even have to hit the gym!)
Here are four easy ways to jumpstart your creativity:
- Start a sketchbook. A lot of people are intimidated at the thought of drawing, but it doesn’t have to be scary. Your drawings don’t have to be good to inspire creative thought—although the more you draw, the better you’ll get. Draw something without lifting your pencil. Sketch or write ideas that pop into your head as you listen to your favorite music. Pick an object and draw it without looking at your paper.
- Find real art. Experiencing art is not only peaceful; it can boost cognitive function, too. Search online for public art in your community and take time to explore a different area each month. You’ll be amazed by the hidden gems you never knew were hiding in your own backyard. Visit an art museum. Become a member and take advantage of membership reciprocity programs. (Many museum memberships allow you free access to a variety of other museums.)
- Keep toys at your desk. Especially in the dreary winter months, it’s easy to get distracted and struggle with problem-solving ideas. Building something with your hands can quickly stimulate your mind. Next time you find yourself in a rut, pull out some Play-Doh, fold an origami hat, or stack some blocks, and get those creative juices flowing again.
